Fatty spew (sometimes spelled "spue") is a natural chemical reaction. During the original tanning process, animal hides are injected with natural oils and fat-liquors to make them soft and supple. Over time, extreme temperature fluctuations or high humidity can cause these deep-seated fats to crystallize and migrate to the surface of the leather.

How to identify it: Fatty spew looks like a milky, white haze or light powder. If you wipe it with a damp cloth, it temporarily disappears, only to return a few days later once the leather dries. It is entirely harmless to the garment, but it requires professional extraction to stop the cycle.

What is Mold and Mildew?

Unlike fatty spew, mold is a living, active fungus that is physically eating the leather fibers. This usually happens when a jacket is stored in a damp, dark basement or attic for years.
