The Synthetic Challenge: Understanding "Hydrolysis"

Genuine animal hide is incredibly resilient and responds beautifully to deep conditioning and fat-liquor replacement. Synthetic materials, however, are essentially plastics. Over time, these materials undergo a chemical breakdown known as hydrolysis.

Hydrolysis is the degradation of the plasticizers within the material, triggered by age, body heat, and humidity. When a faux leather jacket or synthetic varsity sleeve begins to break down at a molecular level, it often develops a distinct, tacky "stickiness."

The "Sticky" Caution: It is crucial to understand that no amount of cleaning can permanently "fix" hydrolysis. While our proprietary immersion processes can safely clean the surface, the stickiness will likely return because the material itself is deteriorating from within.

The Micro-Cracking Rule: Inspect Your Jacket

Before you ever box up your garment for cleaning, we recommend performing a simple visual inspection using what we call the Micro-Cracking Rule.

Take your jacket into a brightly lit room or hold a flashlight directly against the synthetic sleeves or bonded leather panels. Look closely at the surface. Do you see tiny, microscopic hairline fractures spanning across the material? If you do, the material is actively failing.

When synthetic leather reaches the micro-cracking stage, the mechanical action of any cleaning process—no matter how gentle—will likely cause the top finish to flake and peel off entirely.
